What are the three main rifle plate materials?
Nearly every rifle-rated hard armor plate on the market is built from one of three materials, or a combination of them. Ballistic steel (like AR600 and AR700 alloys) is a hardened steel core with a protective coating. Ceramic composite pairs a hard ceramic strike face, such as silicon carbide (SiC), with a backer that catches the shattered projectile. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a layered synthetic material that defeats rounds by deforming and absorbing energy.
Each material defeats a bullet differently, and that difference drives everything else: weight, thickness, multi-hit behavior, shelf life, and price.
What do the NIJ protection levels actually mean?
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) sets the U.S. standard for body armor. Under the long-running NIJ 0101.06 standard, Level III plates are tested against six rounds of 7.62x51mm M80 ball, and Level IV plates are tested against .30-06 M2 armor-piercing. The newer NIJ 0101.07 standard renames rifle protection into three levels: RF1 (7.62x51 M80, 7.62x39, and 5.56 M193), RF2 (all RF1 threats plus 5.56 M855 "green tip"), and RF3 (.30-06 M2 AP).
One honest note: "Level III+" is not an official NIJ rating. It is industry shorthand for plates that exceed Level III against faster threats like M193 and M855. What are the strengths and weaknesses of steel plates?
Steel is the workhorse: it is the most affordable path to true rifle protection, it shrugs off drops and rough handling that would sideline a ceramic plate, it is the thinnest option, and its multi-hit capability is outstanding. The tradeoff is weight; steel is the heaviest material per unit of protection, which matters over a long training day.
The other consideration is fragmentation ("spall"). When a bullet breaks up on hardened steel, the fragments need somewhere to go, which is why our steel plates are offered with a build-up spall coating option. Why choose ceramic composite plates?
Ceramic is how you reach the top of the protection scale. Our Sanctum Level IV plate pairs a silicon carbide strike face with a composite backer and is rated for .30-06 M2 armor-piercing, the RF3-class threat that no steel or standalone PE plate in this catalog is rated to stop. Modern SiC is also lighter than steel at a far higher protection level.
The tradeoffs: ceramic costs more, is thicker, and deserves careful handling. A dropped ceramic plate should be inspected, and any plate that has taken a hit is done. If your threat model includes armor-piercing rifle rounds, ceramic Level IV is the answer.

Is polyethylene worth the premium for the weight savings?
If you wear armor for hours, weight is not a comfort statistic; it is an endurance and mobility factor. UHMWPE plates are dramatically lighter than steel, they float, and they handle multiple hits well.
Two honest limitations: PE is the thickest option, and standalone PE is generally not rated against steel-core penetrator rounds like M855. If green tip is in your threat model, step up to a hybrid or ceramic plate.

What about hybrid plates like SRT/RF2?
